Modify the default routing for a global mailbox

To complete this procedure, you must be logged on as a member of the Domain Admins security group.

If you have a single POP3 mailbox account at your Internet service provider (ISP) designated to receive all e-mail sent to your company or domain, you can use a global mailbox for the Microsoft Connector for POP3 Mailboxes to retrieve the e-mail. When POP3 e-mail is downloaded, Exchange reads the recipients on the To and Cc lines of the message, and then forwards the message to the correct Exchange users. However, the Exchange user name must match the user name of the ISP's POP3 mailbox account. For example, if e-mail is sent to the POP3 mailbox using Chris@<POP3domain>.com (where POP3domain is the domain name for Chris's ISP), then the Exchange user name must be "Chris." If e-mail distributed through a global mailbox does not directly map to an Exchange user, such as e-mail sent to a mailing list, you must modify the default routing of the global mailbox.

  1. Open Server Management. To open Server Management, click Start, and then click Server Management.
  2. In the console tree, click Internet and E-mail.
  3. In the details pane, click Manage POP3 E-mail, and then click Open POP3 Connector Manager. The POP3 Connector Manager Properties dialog box appears.
  4. On the Mailboxes tab, click Add. The POP3 Mailbox dialog box appears.
  5. Complete the requested information, and then click Routing Rules. For more information, see POP3 Mailbox (POP3 Connector Manager).
