Command-Line Interface (CLI)

Applies To: Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003

In the Compute Cluster Server documentation, the term command-line interface (CLI) has a general meaning or a specific meaning, depending on the context.

Used in the general sense, CLI refers to the Windows command prompt, which is a standard Windows feature.

Used in the specific sense, CLI refers to a set of commands entered at the command prompt to create, submit, and manage jobs (user operations), as well as to manage the cluster itself (administrator operations). As such, the CLI provides a command-line alternative to the use of the Compute Cluster Administrator and the Compute Cluster Job Manager.

Windows Command Prompt

To open the Windows command prompt from the Start menu, click All Programs, click Accessories, and then click Command Prompt. You can also open it from the Command Prompt shortcut icon, if available. The command prompt can be customized using the Properties screen (selected by right-clicking the title bar and left-clicking Properties…). The Properties screen allows you set size, color, font, cut and paste mode, and other variables.

CLI command set

As a command set, the CLI consists of five primary commands: job, task, cluscfg, clusrun, and node. With the exception of clusrun, each of these commands is in effect multiple commands, as determined by the operator that follows (for example job new, job submit, job list). For purposes of user operations, job and task are the commands most often used. These correspond to actions that can also be performed through the Job Manager.
