Windows System Image Manager Technical Reference

Windows System Image Manager (Windows SIM) is the tool used to create unattended Windows Setup answer files. You can create an answer file by using information from a Windows image (.wim) file and a catalog (.clg) file. Component settings are added to an appropriate configuration pass in the answer file. You can also add packages to be installed during Windows Setup. The following topics describe conceptual information about Windows SIM.

I was attempting to set the groundwork for making a WinPE bootdisk and after installing the 'WAIK for windows 7, server 2008 and Vista' came across this issue.

The problem is microsofts instructions embedded in the WAIK are incomplete. They say to import the 'install.win' file from your win 7 boot disk (or in your case, I suspect its a server 2008 boot disk). The fix for this problem lies in the .clg file (at least in a Win 7 boot disk) located alongside the 'install.win' file.

steps: (this picks up where you have installed the SIM and are attempting to import the .win file.
1. locate the .clg file that has a similar naming convention (ie. 'install xxxxxxx .clg').
2. plop it locally on the server, not in place of, but alongside your 'install.win' file.
3. import the .clg file to your SIM.

this fix at least works for Win 7

I'm getting an error when I try to select an imported Windows Image when the catalog file is being created. Please help?

<mtps:InstrumentedLink NavigateUrl="http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936922/en-us" runat="server" xmlns:mtps="http://msdn2.microsoft.com/mtps">http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936922/en-us</mtps:InstrumentedLink>

Follow these instructions down to step 4 and use that image. The paragraphs in the begining of this kind of explain why it is not working. I just had this problem myself
