Tool

SMS Server or Client

Description

Advertised Programs Monitor

Client

Enables a user at a client to view a list of the advertised programs that an SMS administrator has made available. Advertised Programs Monitor also enables users to view the status and properties of an advertised program, and to specify whether they are notified when a scheduled program is about to run. For more information, see the SMS client Advertised Programs Monitor Help.

Crystal Info for SMS (formerly Crystal Reports)

Server

Enables you to manage and present SMS data. Crystal Info for SMS provides comprehensive report design, scheduling, and viewing capabilities. For more information, see the Crystal Info for SMS Help.

Event to Trap Translator

Server

Enables you to specify SMS events that are to be translated to SNMP traps.

HealthMon

Server

Enables you to view operational conditions on monitored servers, including both normal and exception status. HealthMon provides a graphical, real-time status view of Windows NT 4.0 Server computers. Status icons enable you to quickly identify the severity of an event (Normal, Warning, or Critical) occurring on a monitored server.

MOF Manager

Server

Enables you to customize the SMS_def.mof file to modify the hardware information that is gathered and reported on client computers.

Network Monitor

Server

Enables you to detect and troubleshoot problems on a network. You can run Network Monitor from within SMS, or you can install it as a stand-alone tool.

Monitor Control Tool

Server

Enables you to identify network traffic patterns and network problems by using real-time monitors. For example, you can configure monitors to generate an event when an IP or IPX router on a subnet fails.

Performance Monitor

Server

Enables you to troubleshoot possible problems (such as unbalanced resource use or insufficient hardware) on Windows NT clients. For example, you can view resource use for specific components and program processes, and the behavior of objects, such as processors, memory, cache, threads, and processes.

Network Trace

Server

Enables you to verify that site systems can communicate with the site server, and to identify and view network connectivity problems within a site. Network Trace maps routes between an SMS site server and site systems, based on the information contained in the SMS site database.

Remote Tools

Server/Client

You can perform the following actions on a remote client computer:
Remote Chat (Server/Client): Enables you to communicate with a user at a remote client. You start the Remote Chat tool on your server; input is provided by the user at the client.
Remote Control (Server): Enables you to view the desktop of a remote client and use your keyboard and mouse as if it were the keyboard and mouse at the client.
Remote Control (Client): Enables a user at a client to specify the following remote control settings: the level of control an SMS administrator has on the client computer, whether permission is required to initiate remote control, and how the user is notified when an administrator controls the client. For more information, see the SMS client Remote Control Help.
Remote Diagnostics (Server): Runs diagnostic tools to help you solve client hardware and software problems. For example, you can gather information about the device drivers installed, the interrupt vector table, and which programs are currently loaded into conventional memory and upper memory.
Remote Execute (Server): Runs an application or a batch file on a remote Windows-based client.
Remote File Transfer (Server): Transfers files between the computer running the SMS Administrator console and a client computer.
Remote Ping (Server): Tests client connectivity.
Remote Reboot (Server): Restarts a remote client.

Remote Event Configuration

Server

Enables you to modify the SNMP event configuration file on remote clients.

Resource Explorer

Server

Enables you to view the software and hardware inventory data of any client in your SMS site.

SMS Installer

Server

Enables you to automatically create software installation packages (known as SMS Installer executable files) for distribution to clients. An SMS Installer executable file is a self-extracting executable file that includes all of the data and files that make up the software application and allows it to be installed. For more information, see the SMS Installer Help.

Set Location

Server

Enables you to restart a report's data access source location and default user rights. By default, the SMS reports' data access source location is set to the SMS site database.

SMS Service Manager

Server

Enables you to control the SMS services. You can view, start, stop, pause, or resume any SMS services or threads running on any site system.

Software Metering

Server/Client

Enables you to monitor and control the use of applications on all computers in your site — even on portable computers that are used away from the network. You can control the number of concurrent software products running, and provide automatic callbacks to notify users when a requested application is available for use. You can also prevent the use of specific applications on your network.
Unsupported platforms Software metering is not available on Alpha computers.

Status Message Viewer

Server

Enables you to view status messages stored in an SMS site database. When Status Message Viewer opens, it runs a query based on where it is being opened, and then displays messages that meet the criteria for that query.

Systems Management

Client

Enables a user at a client to view a list of discovery data for the client computer, enable or disable traveling mode, identify what SMS sites manage the client computer, update site status, view a list of installed SMS components, and update SMS configuration data. This information can be relayed to an SMS administrator to help identify and troubleshoot problems at the client. For more information, see the client SMS Systems Management Help.

Windows NT Event Viewer

Server

Enables you to troubleshoot hardware and software problems on Windows NT clients. You can use Event Viewer to view and manage System, Security, and Application event logs, and to monitor Windows NT Server security events, which are significant system or program problems that users should be notified about.

You can remove HealthMon from your system by using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

Additional Requirements

  • To run HealthMon, you must create a WBEM user account that has access to the computers you want to monitor. To do so, click the Start button, point to Programs, Administrative Tools, and then click User Manager for Domains. Then, add the appropriate accounts to the WBEM Users group. WBEM is automatically installed on all SMS servers and clients. However, if you need to create an account on a computer that is not running WBEM, you must first run WBEMcore.exe from the %sms%\HealthMon\<Platform> directory.

  • On each computer from which you want to collect disk performance information, you must run Diskperf.exe to enable disk performance counters. Because disk performance counters can increase system overhead on slower systems, you should only enable these counters on computers where the physical disk I/O must be monitored.

  • Network interface counters are also disabled by default. To enable these counters, install the SNMP Service (by using the Network option in Control Panel). Alternatively, you can install the Windows NT Resource Kit.
