Install the GPMC

Applies To: Windows 8 Consumer Preview, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 8 Beta

The Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) is included with Windows Server® 2008 and later. However, this feature is not installed with the operating system. Use Server Manager to install the GPMC.

To install the GPMC using the Server Manager user interface

  1. To open Server Manager, click Start and then point to Administrative Tools. Click Server Manager.

  2. In the console tree, click Features. In the Features pane, click Add Features.

  3. In the Add Feature Wizard dialog box, select Group Policy Management Console from the list of available features. Click Install.

  4. Close Server Manager when the installation completes.

  1. Open a command prompt as an administrator.

  2. In the command prompt type ServerManagerCmd -install gpmc.

  3. Close the command prompt when the installation completes.

Running ServerManagerCmd -install gpmc will not work
Running the "<b>ServerManagerCmd -install gpmc</b>" command from either DOS or PowerShell of Windows Server 2008 R2 will result in a message saying that, <div><br /></div><div>"Servermanagercmd.exe is deprecated, and is not guaranteed to be supported in future releases of Windows. We recommend that you use the Windows PowerShell cmdlets that are available for Server Manager."</div><div><br /></div><div>If you look in the Add Feature Wizard of Server 2008 R2, you will find "Group Policy Management" rather than "Group Policy Management Console."</div>
