Concepts

Applies To: Windows Server 2003 R2

Windows and UNIX use very different authentication mechanisms. The Microsoft Identity Management for UNIX components of Windows Server 2003 R2 build on the identity management components originally included in Windows Services for UNIX (User Name Mapping service and Server for NIS). Windows Server 2003 R2 adds direct support for Active Directory Domain Services Lookup while continuing to support the legacy Windows Services for UNIX mechanisms. The following conceptual material applies to the Windows Server 2003 R2 family, the Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 family, and the Windows Unified Data Storage Server 2003 family.
