Checklist: Remote Desktop Licensing Installation Prerequisites

Applies To: Windows Server 2008 R2

RD Licensing manages the Remote Desktop Services client access licenses (RDS CALs) that are required for each device or user to connect to a Remote Desktop Session Host (RD Session Host) server. You use RD Licensing to install, issue, and track the availability of RDS CALs on a Remote Desktop license server.

This checklist provides tasks that an administrator should perform before installing and configuring RD Licensing.

Task Reference

Determine if a Remote Desktop license server is needed.

Remote Desktop supports two concurrent connections to remotely administer a computer. You do not need a license server for these connections.

Verify that the license server supports the operating system of the RD Session Host servers.

RD Licensing in Windows Server 2008 R2 supports RD Session Host servers that run:

  • Windows Server 2008 R2

  • Windows Server 2008

  • Windows Server 2003 R2

  • Windows Server 2003

  • Windows 2000

noteNote
An RD Session Host server running Windows Server 2008 R2 can contact a license server running either Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2008 to request RDS CALs.

Determine which type of RDS CALs to use.
