Checklist: Create a New Instance of AD LDS

Updated: December 30, 2008

Applies To: Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012

An instance of Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS) is a single running copy of AD LDS. Multiple copies of AD LDS can run simultaneously on the same computer. (This is not true for Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS).) This improves availability and load balancing when instances are replicated across multiple servers. Each instance of AD LDS has a separate directory, a unique service name, and a unique service description that is assigned when the instance is created.

Task Reference

Read about AD LDS instances.

Understanding AD LDS Instances
