Installing Identity Management for UNIX

Applies To: Windows Server 2003 R2

Server for NIS is the component of Microsoft Identity Management for UNIX (IDMU) that is of primary importance to Network File System (NFS) authentication, and it can be installed only on a Windows Server 2003 R2 domain controller. Server for NIS cannot be installed on a member server. To install Server for NIS, follow these steps:

  1. Open Add/Remove Programs, and then click the Add/Remove Windows Components button to start the Windows Components Wizard (as shown in Figure 4 in the Installing Services for NFS section of this white paper).

  2. Click Active Directory Services, and then click Details.

  3. Click Highlight Identity Management for UNIX, and then click Details to open the Identity Management for UNIX dialog box (shown in Figure 6).

  4. Click Administration Components and Server for NIS and follow the prompts to install the NIS components of Windows Server 2003 R2. You will need to have the Windows Server 2003 R2 installation media available.

Note

Installing IDMU may require that you restart the computer, so plan your installation accordingly.

Note

If you are using User Name Mapping service, you do not need to install Server for NIS, nor do you need to populate Active Directory Domain Services with UNIX identity information.
