Checking NT System and Application Event Logs

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 with SP1

When looking for information about a problem, always consult the event logs for the application. Logging begins automatically when Windows is started. There are three types of logs: system, security, and application. For each type of log, you can filter the events to be viewed, designate the number of entries to view, specify how long to save entries, and specify whether to automatically overwrite existing events when the log becomes full.

For information about opening Event Viewer to see the event logs, see About Events.
