Upgrading Message Queuing in a server cluster

This topic applies only to Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition or Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition users who need to upgrade an existing server cluster that is running an earlier version of Message Queuing software. For more information on how Message Queuing functions in a server cluster, see Distributing Message Queuing in a network.

Upgrading from Windows 2000 on a cluster containing Message Queuing resources

When upgrading Message Queuing resources from a Windows 2000 cluster, do the following:

  • Confirm that your computer hardware configuration is compatible with Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition or Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition.

  • Take all Message Queuing resources in the cluster offline using Cluster Administrator.

  • Upgrade all of the cluster nodes to Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition or Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition. Before upgrading, use Cluster Administrator to remove resources that are not supported by these operating systems.

  • Bring the Network Name resources back online, ensure that the Distributed Transaction Coordinator (DTC) is online, and then bring the Message Queuing resources online. Note that DTC is required if you want to use external transactions, triggers, or HTTP messaging with Message Queuing applications on your cluster.

For instructions on managing cluster resources, see Manage Resources, in the Server Clusters Help file.

Note that during a rolling upgrade of a cluster, Windows Server 2003 family computers do not support failover of the Message Queuing service from Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition nodes to Windows 2000 nodes.

For more information on creating and configuring Message Queuing Triggers resources in a virtual server, see Configure trigger resources for server clusters.

Upgrading MSMQ 1.0 in a server cluster

You can also upgrade from Windows NT Server 4.0 to Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition or Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition on a cluster that contains DTC and Message Queuing resources. There is a Knowledge Base (KB) article available with detailed instructions for this upgrade scenario. To search for this KB article, see Searching the Knowledge Base (https://www.microsoft.com/)
