Ensuring Failover and High Availability

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

You can create a standby server that is running MIIS 2003 before you set up your primary server running MIIS 2003. If the SQL Server 2000 installation that contains your MIIS database resides on a separate server from the primary and standby MIIS 2003 installations, you can activate the standby server to ensure that MIIS 2003 is available even if your primary system fails. To activate a standby server running MIIS 2003, you need to run MIISactivate on the standby server by using the Microsoft Identity Integration Server service account credentials and the most recent backup copy of the MIIS 2003 encryption key.

For more information about MIISactivate, see “MIISactivate: Server activation tool” in MIIS 2003 Help. For more information about the MIIS 2003 encryption keys, see “MIISkmu: Encryption key management tool” in MIIS 2003 Help. For more information about backing up your encryption key, see “Backing Up the MIIS 2003 Encryption Key” earlier in this topic.
