Adding a Windows Server 2008 as an additional domain controller to a Windows Server 2003 Network
This document describes how to join a computer that is running the Windows Server 2008 as an additional domain controller to a Windows Server 2003 Network. You will need to first prepare the Server 2003 forest or domain installation. To do this:<br /><br /><ul><li>Insert the Windows Server 2008 installation DVD.</li><li>Click <b>Start</b>, click <b>Run</b>, type <code>cmd</code>, and then click <b>OK</b> to open the command prompt window.</li><li>At the command prompt, type <i>DVDdriveletter</i><code>:\sources\adprep\adprep.exe /forestprep</code>. Type <code>c</code> at the ADPREP warning, and then press ENTER.</li><li>Still at the command prompt, type <i>DVDdriveletter</i><code>:\sources\adprep\adprep.exe /domainprep</code></li><li>Install Windows Server 2008 on the server you would like to make an additional domain controller</li><li>After the installation, connect the Windows Server 2008 to the Server 2003 network.</li><li>Log on to the computer that is running Windows Server 2008 using the local administrator account and perform the initial server configuration tasks.</li><li>Run the domain controller installation wizard by clicking on <b><b>Start</b>, type <code>dcpromo</code>, and then press ENTER.</b></li><li>Click Next to advance through the wizard until you arrive at the <b>Choose a Deployment Configuration</b> page.</li><li>On the <b>Choose a Deployment Configuration</b> page, select <b>Existing forest</b>, select <b>Add a domain controller to an existing domain</b>, and then click Next.</li><li>On the <b>Network Credentials</b> page, type the name of your Windows Server 2003 domain name and then click <b>Set</b>. The Windows Security dialog box appears. </li><li>Type the user name and password for the Windows Server 2003 domain administrator, click <b>OK</b>, and then click Next.</li><li>On the <b>Select a Domain</b> page, ensure that the domain name you typed in step 11 appears in the list of domains.</li><li>Click Next to advance through the wizard until you arrive at the <b>Additional Domain Controller Options</b> page.</li><li>On the <b>Additional Domain Controller Options</b> page, clear the <b>DNS server</b> check box, and then click <b>Next </b>until you arrive at the<b> Directory Services Restore Mode Administrator Password</b> page.</li><li>On the <b>Directory Services Restore Mode Administrator Password</b> page, type the password to use when starting the computer that is running Windows Server 2008 in Directory Services Restore Mode.</li><li>Continue through the wizard and accept all remaining default settings.</li><li>After finishing the wizard, restart the server.</li><li>Using the <b>Server Manager </b>you can now monitor your current roles or add more roles to this server depending on your organizational requirements.</li></ul>
