Estimating Database Growth

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

When estimating the amount of storage required for your RMS databases, plan for a minimum capacity of 10 megabytes (MB) and then add an additional 1 MB for every 500 users for the RMS configuration database. The logging database can exist on a different database server than the configuration database.

If you are using the RMS logging feature, the logging database needs to support growth of approximately 1 MB for each user during the initial user certification phase when a large amount of logging occurs. For example, if your deployment will support 1,000 users, the logging database will grow to 1 gigabyte (GB) as each of those users are activated and certified by the RMS root cluster. Under routine operations, the logging database may grow at the rate of 200 kilobytes (KB) for each user per day (if you are doing a phased rollout, estimate an additional 1 MB for each new user added to the system.)
