Additional RMS Resources

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

This topic provides references to additional resources that you can use to help you understand RMS and the technologies that it uses. The following is a list of these resources:

  • Microsoft Windows Rights Management Services for Windows Server 2003. An overview of RMS and links to more information are available at the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=62778).

  • Windows Rights Management Services: Helping Organizations Safeguard Digital Information from Unauthorized Use. A white paper that provides an overview of RMS with Service Pack 1 for Windows Server 2003 is available at the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=64636).

  • Rights Management Add-On for Internet Explorer. The Rights Management Add-on for Internet Explorer is a way that Windows users can view files that have restricted permissions without the need for an RMS-enabled application. These restrictions help people prevent sensitive documents, Web-based information, and e-mail messages from being forwarded, edited, or copied by unauthorized individuals. You can download the Rights Management Add-on for Internet Explorer from the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=103747).

  • Microsoft TechNet. Microsoft TechNet is a central information and community resource that is designed for IT professionals. It is designed to meet the technical information needs of anyone who plans, evaluates, deploys, maintains, or supports Microsoft business products. On the TechNet Web site, you can find in-depth information about how to deploy and manage the Microsoft server technologies that are involved in a RMS deployment, such as the Windows Server 2003 operating systems, Internet Information Services (IIS), and Microsoft® SQL Server® 2000. TechNet is available on the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=16190).

  • Application Architecture for .NET: Designing Applications and Services. This guide gives a basic overview of Microsoft .NET Web services that may help you understand how the Web services that are implemented by RMS function. It provides architecture and design-level guidance for application architects and developers who need to build distributed solutions with the .NET Framework. This information is available at the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=103749).

  • Microsoft .NET Framework. The .NET Framework is a component of the Windows operating system that was used to build and run Windows-based applications. For developers, the .NET Framework makes it easy to rapidly create powerful software that maximizes performance, scalability, opportunities for integration, reliability, security, and the end-user experience, while minimizing the costs of deployment and management. Information about the latest version of the .NET Framework is available from the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=103748).

  • Microsoft UDDI Business Registry. The Microsoft UDDI Business Registry is both a white pages business directory and a technical specifications library. You can look up the Web services interfaces of your business partners and potential partners, find information about working with other Web services, and post information. Microsoft Activation, Enrollment, and lockbox services are registered at this location. This information is available at Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=14794).

  • Planning Your Public Key Infrastructure. A high-level overview of public key infrastructure (PKI) is available on the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=47508). It provides a starting point to help you understand some of the technologies that are used in RMS.

  • Public Key Infrastructure Implementation and Design. By Suranjan Choudhury, Kartik Bhatnagar, and Wasim Hague, M&T Books, New York, NY. Copyright 2002. ISBN: 0-7645-4879-4. This book covers all aspects of PKI, including architecture, cryptography, standards, certificates, design, and operation. It provides a good basis for understanding some of the technologies that are used in RMS, such as certificates, public and private keys, and trust hierarchies.

  • XrML organization Web site. The XrML organization Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=44492) provides information about XrML technology, including specifications, tools, and reference materials.

  • Windows Server 2003 Security Guide. This guide contains information about securing Windows Server 2003. You can download it from the Microsoft Download Center, which is available on the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=36719).

  • SQL Server Security. The SQL Server Security Web page includes links to information about how to secure SQL Server. It is available from the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=103817).
