The Discuss a Document feature in a Web site based on SharePoint™ Team Services from Microsoft enables you to attach comments to a Web page within your SharePoint team Web site, within your intranet, or anywhwere on the World Wide Web. This article supplements information in the Troubleshooting topic in SharePoint Team Services Site Help.

I'm denied access to discuss some URLs, but I'm allowed access to other URLs.

If you have permission to participate in discussions in your team Web site but do not have the same level of permissions on the root Web that hosts your team Web site, you may not be allowed to access some URLs by using the Discuss a Document feature. This can happen, for example, if the root Web allows anonymous access and anonymous users are allowed merely to browse to the site (not contribute to discussions). In this case, you would be able to use the Discuss a Document feature only for URLs that are within your team Web site.

To correct this problem

  • Contact your server administrator, and request to be added to the Contributor role (or any role with discussion permissions) on the root Web.

When I try to use the Discuss a Document feature, I see a message that my browser type is not supported.

The Discuss a Document feature is not supported in browsers on the Macintosh.

To correct this problem

  • Use Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or later, or use a Netscape Navigator 4 version (except 4.08) on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows® 98 or later.

My discussion server is Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server, but I still can't close discussions.

Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server implements a Web discussions feature that is similar to SharePoint Team Services, but only SharePoint Team Services provides the ability to close discussions.

To correct this problem

  1. On the Web Discussions toolbar, click Discussions, and then click Discussion Options.

  2. In the Select a discussion server box, type the name of a server that is running SharePoint Team Services.

When I start my Web browser, I don't see the discussions I added to a Web page.

If you added discussions to a Web page and left the Web Discussions toolbar open when you quit the Web browser, the discussions may not appear the next time you start the browser, especially if you have changed the browser's home page since the last time you started the browser.

To correct this problem

  • Close the Web Discussions toolbar, and then open it again.
