Scheduling

Administrators normally schedule backups during times of lowactivity usage. The majority of the external users accessing thehosted sites resided in North America, so backups were scheduled tocoincide with non-business hours in North America. Administratorsmust also take into account how long each part of the backup willtake. Table 4 shows the typical backup size and time needed for thefour types of backups required for this deployment of WindowsSharePoint Services.

Backup times vary between deployments. By using the DellPowerVault 120T DLT4000 Tape Autoloader, Veritas Backup Execsoftware, and the Hewlett-Packard DL360 backup server, the InternetPlatform and Operations group achieved a backup and verificationrate of approximately 3.4 GB per hour.

Table 5 shows the tape backup schedule for the deployment inlocal time for the servers Pacific Daylight Time. Theintervals between backup jobs allowed time for jobs to completebefore the next job started. The backup start times can be adjustedto accommodate future growth.
