1.0 Setup for the Resource Kit Software

The Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Resource Kit Supplement Four is located in a series of folders on the Windows NT 4.0 Resource Kit Utilities CD. The root folder of the CD contains the setup files, this release notes file, and directories for the two major platforms supported by the Resource Kit (I386 and Alpha).

For a complete list of tools included in the Resource Kit, see Tools Help (Ntrktool.chm) on this CD.

Important: Many of the tools will not work unless you are logged on as a member of the Administrators group.

1.1 General Setup Instructions

If you have a previous Windows NT Server Resource Kit installed on your computer, it is recommended that you uninstall that version(s) before installing this version.

To install the software, you must be part of the Administrator's group.

A full installation requires approximately 50 megabytes (MB) of free space.

Before installing Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Resource Kit Supplement Four, you must have the following software installed. Note that this software can be installed from the Resource Kit CD.

  • Internet Explorer 4.10 SP 1 or later

  • Service Pack 4 or later

Tool Notes

  • To use the File Copy Utility for Microsoft Message Queue Server (fcopy.exe) tool, you must already have Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ) Server installed.

  • Service Monitoring Tool (Svcmon.exe) requires its own installation. See "Installing and configuring Service Monitoring Tool" in the Ntrktool.chm online Help file.

To set up the standard Resource Kit tools

  1. Start Windows NT Server and insert the Resource Kit CD in the CD-ROM drive. The Resource Kit master setup screen appears. All options that are valid for your installation platform (i386 or alpha) are installable. Any non-installable options are grayed-out. See section 1.3, "Hardware-Platform Issues" for a listing of platform specific tools.

  2. Click the Install Resource Kit option.

  3. Follow the instructions on screen to complete Setup of the standard tools.

To set up additional items at a later time from the CD or a network sharepoint

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.

  2. In the Run dialog box, type:

    cd_driveletter : setup.exe or network address\setup.exe

Then click OK. When the Resource Kit setup screen appears, notice that some options may not be highlighted. This is because they are available only on certain hardware platforms.

  3. Click the option that you want to install.

  4. Follow the instructions on screen to complete Setup of your selected item.

Setup creates a Resource Kit 4.0 program group on the Programs menu. To open the Programs menu, click the Start button, and then click Programs. The Resource Kit 4.0 program group contains shortcuts for all of the Resource Kit tools, utilities, and documentation installed on your computer, organized by category.

For more information about the tools, choose the Resource Kit Tools Overview (Ntrktool.chm) shortcut.

By default, the Resource Kit installs in the C:\ntreskit folder of your computer's hard disk. You can choose another directory name for installation, but bear in mind that if you do you may encounter versioning problems of tools installed with future Resource Kits.

Setup also adds the C:\ntreskit directory (or the directory name you choose for installing the utilities) to the path system environment variable. (If you want to change your path double-click the System icon in Control Panel after the Resource Kit installation is complete.)

Some Resource Kit tools require separate or additional setup besides the steps described above. The sections that follows describe some special setup requirements and how to set up items at a later date. For more information about each of these tools and others with additional requirements, see the Windows NT Resource KitTools online Help file (Ntrktool.chm). You can open it by choosing the Resource Kit Tools Overview menu item in the Programs menu. To open the Programs menu, click the Start button, and then click Programs.

1.2 Uninstalling the Windows NT Server Resource Kit

To uninstall Resource Kit components, click the Add/Remove Programs icon in Control Panel, and then double-click Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Resource Kit Supplement Four.

If you have a previous Windows NT Resource Kit installed:

  • For any Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Resource Kit version: If you have installed this software in the same directory as any previous Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Resource Kit (Supplement 1, Supplement 2 or Supplement 3), it will not uninstall cleanly. Although they won't cause any problems, some files will be left on your computer: To ensure a clean uninstall, uninstall any previous Resource Kits before installing Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Resource Kit Supplement 4.

Note: After you uninstall any previous Microsoft Windows NT Server Resource Kit then install Supplement 4, you will see an end-user license warning. If the Resource Kit you just removed was licensed, you can continue with your installation.

For Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Resource Kit Supplement 3 only: You may see duplicate Resource Kit Start menu items if:

    1. You have installed Supplement 4 over Supplement 3 and;

    2. Active Desktop and Internet Explorer 4.x are not installed.

1.5 Source Code

1.5.1 Perl 5 Source Code

The Perl 5 scripting language is installed during the main Resource Kit Setup process. However, if you also want the most recent binaries, source code and additional files for building purposes, see the Perl home page on the World Wide Web at:

https://www.activestate.com/

1.5.2 POSIX Source Code

On your Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Resource Kit Supplement Four CD, the \platform**\Scrpting\posix\source** directory contains the C language source code to the POSIX utilities that are shipped with the Windows NT Resource Kit. This source code and the POSIX utility binaries are not supported by Microsoft and have not undergone formal testing. If they do not work correctly and you are a proficient C programmer, you may be able to fix any bugs yourself. Consult the Win32 Software Development Kit for Windows NT for background information on building POSIX programs.

To install the POSIX source code

  • At the command prompt, type the following lines:

    md c:\posix

    xcopy cd_driveletter:\platform \Scrpting\posix\source c:\posix\ /s /e /i

    c:

    cd \posix

    longname

Notice that the partition to which you copy the source code must have the NTFS file system. Also, from the directory to which you copied all the source code, you must run the Longname.bat file before attempting to compile any of the utilities. This batch file renames many of the files to their correct name, which is often longer than the standard 8.3 filename. If you do not run this batch file, the utilities will not compile correctly.

The following utilities may require code changes to make them work on RISC-based computers: AR.EXE, CC.EXE, DEVSRV.EXE, LD.EXE, MAKE.EXE. For example, CC.EXE invokes "CL386" to compile other programs; on RISC-based computers, you must change the code to invoke the proper compiler.

The following copyright notice applies to both the POSIX utilities provided in binary form as well as the source code on the CD.

1.5.3 REXX Source Code

The Regina REXX scripting language is installed during the main Resource Kit Setup process. However, if you also want the source code and additional files for building purposes, you need only copy those files from the CD.

To install the Regina REXX source code

  • At the command prompt, type the following lines:

    md c:\rexx

    xcopy cd_driveletter: \ platform \Scripting\rexx\source c:\rexx

    c:
