Create an Application Setting (IIS 7)

Create an application setting when you want to create application-wide values in a central location that can be accessed from anywhere in the application. You can change your application's configuration easily if you store it in the application settings section of the Web.config file instead of putting it in your application code files.

Note

Adding a configuration setting adds the setting at the local level and to any child levels that inherit the setting.

To create an application setting

You can perform this procedure by using the user interface (UI), by running Appcmd.exe commands in a command-line window, by editing configuration files directly, or by writing WMI scripts.

User Interface

To Use the UI

Open IIS Manager and navigate to the level you want to manage. For information about opening IIS Manager, see Open IIS Manager (IIS 7). For information about navigating to locations in the UI, see Navigation in IIS Manager (IIS 7).
In Features View, double-click Application Settings.
In the Actions pane, click Add.
In the Add Application Setting dialog box, type a name for the application setting in the Name text box.
In the Add Application Setting dialog box, type a value for the application setting in the Value text box, and then click OK.

Command-line

To add an application setting, use the following syntax:

appcmd set config /commit:MACHINE /section:appSettings /+"[key='string',value='string']"

The variable key string is the name of the application setting and the variable value string is the value for the application setting. For example, to add an application setting for the name of your application, type the following at the command prompt, and then press Enter:

appcmd set config /commit:MACHINE /section:appSettings /+"[key='Application Name',value='MyApplication']"
