Before you can migrate or upgrade RMS servers to Windows Server 2008 and AD RMS, all servers in the RMS cluster must be running RMS with Service Pack 1 (SP1) or RMS with Service Pack 2 (SP2). Before you can migrate or upgrade RMS servers to Windows Server 2008 R2, all servers in the RMS cluster must be running RMS with Service Pack 2 (SP2). If RMS with SP1 or RMS with SP2 is not installed on every RMS server in your cluster, you must download and install it from the Microsoft Download Center:

You can check the installed version of RMS by using the RMS Global Administration Web page.

To check the installed version of RMS

  1. Log on to a server in the RMS cluster with an account that is a member of the local Administrators group.

  2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Windows RMS, and then click Windows RMS Administration.

  3. Ensure that either Windows Rights Management Services 1.0 with SP1 or Windows Rights Management Services 1.0 with SP2 appears above Global Administration.

  4. Repeat steps 1–3 for every server in the RMS cluster.
