Configuring Expiration Policies

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1

Expiration policies can be set separately for each virtual server. Expiration policies specify the article age limit for newsgroups; they also specify the newsgroups to which the policy applies. If a newsgroup is assigned to more than one expiration policy, the more restrictive policy applies.

Important

You must be a member of the Administrators group on the local computer to perform the following procedure or procedures. As a security best practice, log on to your computer by using an account that is not in the Administrators group, and then use the runas command to run IIS Manager as an administrator. At a command prompt, type runas /User:Administrative_AccountName "mmc %systemroot%\system32\inetsrv\iis.msc".

Procedures

To create a new expiration policy

  1. In IIS Manager, expand the local computer, and then expand the NNTP virtual server that you want.

  2. Right-click Expiration Policies, point to New, and then click Expiration Policy.

  3. Follow the steps in the New NNTP Expiration Policy Wizard. The wizard will prompt you for the name of an expiration policy, the newsgroups it will affect, and the expiration period. These properties are described in the table below.

To edit an existing expiration policy

  1. In IIS Manager, expand the local computer, expand the NNTP virtual server that you want, and then click Expiration Policies.

  2. In the details pane, right-click the expiration policy that you want to edit, and then click Properties.

  3. Change the options in the Expiration Policy box as needed.

    Note

Use the Move Up and Move Down buttons to specify which newsgroups the expiration policy should apply to and in what order. For example, if you want to include all of the alt.tv newsgroups (alt.tv.) in the policy, but exclude the alt.tv.cable newsgroup from the policy, meaning that you want to apply an expiration policy to all of the alt.tv newsgroups except the alt.tv.cable newsgroup, use the Move Up and Move Down buttons to include alt.tv. first and exclude alt.tv.cable second.

The following properties can be set for expiration policies:
