Installing and Enabling FrontPage Server Extensions

Updated: August 22, 2005

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 with SP1

By default, IIS 6.0 is installed in a locked mode that serves only static HTTP content, thus protecting your systems from malicious users and attackers. When your server receives a default installation, the request handlers that process dynamic content are disabled, which means that features like FrontPage Server Extensions and ASP.NET do not work.

If you use the Configure Your Server Wizard to install IIS 6.0, you can elect to install and enable FrontPage Server Extensions at the time you configure your server role. If you do not install FrontPage Server Extensions at that time, you can add them to your application server at a later time.

IIS 6.0 Application Isolation Modes

An IIS 6.0 Web server always runs in one of two mutually exclusive application isolation modes. When you install FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions on an IIS 6.0 Web server, the server extensions run in the application isolation mode that you have chosen to run on the server. The application isolation mode you choose depends on what mode best fits your needs, and you can change the isolation mode after installation. At the time you install IIS 6.0, a default application isolation mode is assigned as follows:

  • For clean installations, worker process isolation mode is the default mode.

  • For upgrade installations, IIS 5.0 isolation mode is the default mode.

For more information about choosing an IIS 6.0 isolation mode, see Running IIS 6.0 as an Application Server.

Installing FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions

Before you install FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions, consider the following guidelines:

  • You must run FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions on a computer that uses only the NTFS file system.

Before you install FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions on an application server, verify that all disk volumes on the computer are formatted with the NTFS file system. Windows provides a conversion utility (Convert.exe) that you can use to convert an existing file allocation table (FAT) or FAT32 volume to NTFS without losing data. If you try to install FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions to a disk drive that is formatted with FAT, your default Web site is not extended.

For more information about converting FAT or FAT32 volumes to NTFS, see Reformatting or converting a partition to use NTFS in Help and Support Center for Windows Server 2003.

  • If you upgrade from an earlier version of FrontPage Server Extensions, you must manually upgrade each FrontPage-extended Web site.

If you are running multiple extended Web sites and you upgrade from FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions running on the Microsoft® Windows®  2000 Server operating system to FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions running on Microsoft® Windows® Server 2003, Standard Edition; Microsoft® Windows® Server 2003, Enterprise Edition; Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Web Edition; or Microsoft® Windows® Server 2003, Datacenter Edition operating system, you must manually upgrade each FrontPage-extended Web site. If you have a single FrontPage-extended Web site and you upgrade to FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions running on Windows Server 2003, the extended Web site automatically upgrades to FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions.

If you have a Web server that runs on Windows Server 2003 and that has multiple extended Web sites, you must upgrade all your extended Web sites to FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions.

noteNote
In FrontPage2002 Server Extensions, the lightweight server extensions option is no longer supported. When you upgrade an extended Web site to FrontPage2002 Server Extensions, it receives a full (not a lightweight) implementation.

For more information about upgrading your FrontPage-extended Web sites, see Upgrading from FrontPage Server Extensions and Office Server Extensions.

To install and enable FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions
  1. From the Start menu, click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.

  3. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.

  4. In the Windows Components Wizard, double-click Application Server, double-click Internet Information Services, and then select the FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions check box.

  5. Click OK twice, click Next, and then click Finish.

For more information about installing and setting up FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions, including sample scripts to automate installation, see IIS 6.0 Administration Scripts, Tips, and Tricks.

Enabling Web Service Extensions

If you have FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions installed on your Web server but they do not work, check that you have them enabled. For information about enabling Web service extensions, see Enabling Web Service Extensions. For more information about enabling dynamic content, such as FrontPage Server Extensions, see Enabling and Disabling Dynamic Content in IIS 6.0.
