Introduction

The MultiLanguage Pack for Microsoft® Project 2000 is a set of plug-in language features that allows users to display the Microsoft Project user interface and online Help in several languages and to create documents in many other languages. With the MultiLanguage Pack, you can have a single installation of Microsoft Project for your entire international organization. The installation can be customized to include local language capabilities or allow users to select their own language settings.

The MultiLanguage pack will only work with the English version of Microsoft Project and is distinct from the stand-alone localized versions of Microsoft Project. Before you can install and use the MultiLanguage pack, you need to install the English version of Microsoft Project. The MultiLanguage Pack will not work with localized versions of Microsoft Project 2000.

Note: The MultiLanguage Pack for Microsoft Project 2000 will be available through Microsoft licensing programs such as Open, Select, and Enterprise Agreement. The MultiLanguage Pack can also be purchased from Microsoft License Online or from a reseller. The MultiLanguage Pack Setup program is available in English only.

The MultiLanguage Pack for Microsoft Project will include five languages: German, Japanese, French, Italian, and Spanish. Other languages are available only as language-specific versions of Microsoft Project and not within the MultiLanguage Pack.

If you have a Korean, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, or Hebrew version of Microsoft Project, and you want to see an English version of the user interface, you will be able to install and use the Microsoft Project English Language Pack. The English Language Pack will be shipped with these localized versions, and it will allow you to set these language interfaces back to English.

International deployment strategies with the MultiLanguage Pack

Depending on the structure of your organization and the languages that you need, you can adopt one of several different strategies for deploying Microsoft Project internationally, using the MultiLanguage Pack.

If your organization is centralized, where one administrative group deploys Microsoft Project to the entire organization, the installation can be customized at your headquarters and deployed directly to users internationally. In this scenario, you customize the MultiLanguage Pack and create a custom installation of Microsoft Project for each language.

For example, if you are deploying Microsoft Project and the MultiLanguage Pack to users in the United States and Canada, you might deploy Microsoft Project as follows:

  • For English-speaking users in the United States, enable languages for editing as needed.

  • For Spanish-speaking users in the United States, install Spanish language features from the MultiLanguage Pack, leave the installation language set at U.S. English, set the user interface and online Help language to Spanish, and enable Spanish for editing (English is automatically enabled for editing if the installation language is English).

  • For users in English-speaking Canadian provinces, set the installation language to Canadian English, and enable Canadian French and Canadian English for editing.

  • For users in Québec, install French language features from the MultiLanguage Pack, set the installation language to Canadian French, set the user interface and online Help language to Canadian French, and enable Canadian French and Canadian English for editing.

If your organization's administrative resources are distributed internationally, each local subsidiary can modify the standard installation for local users. In this case, a central corporate administrative group supplies each local office with a standard Windows installer transform (MST file) with the installation language set to English. Local administrators customize the MultiLanguage Pack, select language settings, and modify the transform for their language(s).

For example, if you are a site administrator in Japan, you might customize the corporate deployment as follows:

  • Install Japanese language features on users' computers and set Japanese language features so that they are installed the first time users activate the features.

  • Set English or Japanese as the language for the user interface and online Help, set the installation language to English, enable Japanese and English for editing, and select Japanese as the preferred language.

  • Customize Microsoft Project for Japanese users.

Using the English Language Pack with localized versions of Microsoft Project 2000

There are some drawbacks to deploying localized versions of Microsoft Project rather than standardizing on a single version. With separate versions, you need separate procedures for deployment, support, and administration. Also, localized versions do not usually support the ability to switch the language of the user interface.

However, some localized versions of Microsoft Project 2000 will provide limited ability to switch the language of the user interface. You will be able to switch the language of the user interface to English in the following localized versions of Microsoft Project 2000:

  • Hebrew

  • Simplified Chinese

  • Traditional Chinese

  • Japanese

  • Korean

To switch the user interface for these languages to English, you can use the English Language Pack for Microsoft Project 2000, which will be shipped with these localized versions.

Depending on your needs, you can deploy a localized version of Microsoft Project 2000 in selected areas. For example, you might deploy Microsoft Project 2000 with MultiLanguage Pack everywhere except Japan, where you deploy the Japanese version of Microsoft Project 2000.

Deploying multilanguage and localized versions of Microsoft Project Central

You will be able to deploy and maintain a single version of Microsoft Project Central, throughout your multinational organization, by using Microsoft Project Central with Microsoft Project Central Language Packs. For example, you will be able to install an English version of Microsoft Project Central, while supporting German or Japanese users entering and viewing task information in their native languages.

The Microsoft Project Central Language Packs will need to be installed on the server only. They are currently in development and will be available from the Office Tools on the Web site. Check the Office Tools on the Web site for updated information. The language packs will include files for displaying the Microsoft Project Central user interface and online Help in different languages. For administrators, this functionality means that you can deploy a single version of Microsoft Project Central to all users, regardless of their language. Then, you can customize the installation to include local language capabilities or allow users to select their own language settings.

For some languages, you may need to download language support files. If you want to see the Microsoft Project Central user interface, for example, in an Asian language or Hebrew, and the language pack for that language is installed on the server, you may be prompted by Internet Explorer to download language support files for that the particular language. Others, such as Western European languages, do not require you to download language support files.

The Microsoft Project Central Server detects a user's Internet Explorer language setting (as specified by clicking the Languages button on the General tab of the Internet Options dialog box). If the language pack for that language is installed on the Microsoft Project Central Server, it displays the Microsoft Project Central interface using that language.

If you want to input text into most areas of Microsoft Project Central—including status reports, the Timesheet, and messages—in an Asian language or Hebrew, you can use an Input Method Editor (IME).

Notes:

  • To install another language version of Microsoft Project Central, do not use the Microsoft Project Central Setup program. If you attempt to run the installation program twice, you will not be able to install a second copy of Microsoft Project Central. Use the Microsoft Project Central Language Packs to install different language versions of Microsoft Project Central. These Language Packs will be available from the Office Tools on the Web site.

  • Don't use the Microsoft Office Language Settings program to change the language setting for Microsoft Project Central. The Microsoft Office Language Settings program is only used to change the language setting for Microsoft Project and Office 2000 applications.

  • If you install a localized version of Microsoft Project 2000, the default language setting for Microsoft Project Central will be in the same language. All localized versions of Microsoft Project Central contain an English version as well, in case you want to switch the language settings to English.
