Connect to a Telnet Server as an Administrator

You can use this procedure to connect to a Telnet server as a member of the Administrators group.

Telnet is a text-based tool, and does not have a means to filter security tokens until the tokens are confirmed. Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 introduce User Account Control (UAC), which restricts the use of administrator rights and privileges by "filtering" the Administrators group security identifier (SID) from your security token, and requesting confirmation for each task that attempts to use that SID. Therefore, you must perform one of the following procedures to connect to a Telnet server as an administrator.

Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

To connect to a Telnet server by using NTLM authentication

  1. If you are connecting to a remote Telnet server, no special steps are required. If the user account provided is a member of the Administrators group on the Telnet server, then you can perform administrative tasks in your Telnet session.

  2. If you are connecting to a remote Telnet server on which you are using Telnet Client, you must start the Telnet Client service by running telnet.exe in the Run as administrator command prompt context.

To connect to a Telnet server by using password authentication
