Updated: June 25, 2007

Applies To: Windows Server 2008

You can use this procedure to view or modify the elements contained in a distribution list. Modify the contents of a distribution list to change the Message Queuing queues that will receive messages sent to the distribution list.

Membership in <Domain>\Domain Administrators, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Users and Computers.

  2. In the console tree, double-click the domain node.

  3. Click the folder that contains the distribution group.

  4. In the console tree, right-click the applicable distribution list (group).

    Where?

    • Active Directory Users and Computers/YourDomain/Folder/YourDistributionList(Group)

  5. Click Properties.

  6. On the Members page, you can view the list of members in the distribution list (group) selected. The explicit members of a distribution list can be public queues, queue aliases, and other distribution lists. You can also delete elements (members) from the distribution list (group) as follows: click the applicable element (member), click Remove, and then click OK.

  7. To add a public queue to a distribution list (group), do the following:

In the console tree, click the applicable msmq object (console tree location is: Active Directory Users and Computers/YourDomain/YourOrganizationalUnit (such as Computers or Domain Controllers)/YourComputer/msmq). Then, in the right-hand pane of Active Directory Users and Computers right-click the applicable public queue.

    1. Click Properties.

    2. On the Member of page, click Add.

    3. On the Select Groups dialog box, in Enter the object names to select, type the name of a distribution list (group) or the names of several distribution lists (groups) separated by semicolons, click OK, and then click OK again. Or click Advanced to search for distribution lists (groups), enter the applicable parameters, click FindNow, select the applicable distribution lists (groups), click OK, click OK again, and then click OK a third time.

  8. To add private queues or URL-named queues to a distribution list (group), do the following:

    1. Create an alias for each private queue or URL-named queue that you want to add to the distribution list (group). For information about how to create an alias for a private queue or a URL-named queue, see Additional references.

    2. In the console tree, right-click the distribution list (group) to which you want to add a queue alias or queue aliases (console tree location is: Active Directory Users and Computers/YourDomain/Users/YourDistributionList(Group)).

    3. Click Properties.

    4. On the Members page, click Add. In the Select Users, Contacts, Computers, or Groups dialog box, click Object Types, select the Other objects check box, clear the remaining check boxes, and click OK. In Enter the object names to select, type the name of a queue alias or the names of several queue aliases separated by semicolons, click OK, and then click OK again. Or click Advanced to search for queue aliases, enter the applicable parameters, click Find Now, select the queue alias, click OK, click OK again, and then click OK a third time.

    4. Or click Advanced to search for distribution lists (groups), enter the applicable parameters, click Find Now, select the applicable distribution lists (groups), click OK, click OK again, and then click OK a third time.

  10. To add a distribution list (group) as a member of another distribution list (group), do the following:

    2. Click Properties.

    3. On the Member of page, click Add.

    4. On the Select Groups dialog box, in Enter the object names to select, type the name of a distribution list (group) or the names of several distribution lists (groups) separated by semicolons, click OK, and then click OK again. Or click Advanced to search for distribution lists (groups), enter the applicable parameters, click Find Now, select the applicable distribution lists (groups), click OK, click OK again, and then click OK a third time.

  • Message Queuing distribution lists are distribution group objects in Active Directory Domain Services.

  • The explicit members of distribution lists can be public queues, queue aliases, and other distribution lists, but not private queues or URL-named queues. Private queues and URL-named queues can be included in a distribution list by using queue aliases. For information about how to create an alias for a private queue or a URL-named queue, see Additional references.
