Transport Server

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2

During installation, you can choose to install only the Transport Server role service. This role service provides a subset of the functionality of Windows Deployment Services and you can install it in environments that do not have Active Directory Domain Services, DHCP, or DNS. Transport Server contains only the core networking parts of Windows Deployment Services.

You can use Transport Server to network boot computers into Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE), transmit data (including operating system images) using multicasting, or both. Install Transport Server in advanced scenarios as a part of a custom deployment solution. Although you do not need to have experience with software development to implement this solution, you should have experience with using command-line tools and writing scripts.

For information about how to configure Transport Server to network boot computers, and/or to multicast data, see Using Transport Server (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=143905).
