Print Migration Tool

Updated: November 30, 2007

Applies To: Windows Server 2008

You can use the Printer Migration Wizard or the Printbrm.exe command-line tool to export print queues, printer settings, printer ports, and language monitors, and then import them on another print server that is running a Windows operating system. This is an efficient way to consolidate multiple print servers or replace an older print server.

Needs more features

This is good start but doesn't cover this scenerio. We need to move from a 2003 server to a 2008 R2 server. The tool will not migrate these printers because they are using an old version of the HP universal printer driver (4.7). We did not install the 64bit version of the 4.7 driver because we weren't using it at the time. Without the matching 4.7 64bit driver, the 2008 r2 will not migrate these printers. HP does not allow you to download the older versions of the UPD and so we can't just install the 64bit version on the new server.

So next we considered installing the 32bit HP UPD 5.3 driver on the old 2003 print server. The main issue with this is that this server is in production and messing with drivers version could mess up our existing environment. The bigger problem is that it will take a very long time to change each printer to the new 5.3 version. Putting the click time aside, it has to think about each driver changeover for almost a minute. Even if we did get the 64bit 4.7 driver, we'd still have to do this one the new server...

So Microsoft, please add a feature to prompt for which driver to use on the new server. This should be true regardless if the old driver exists on the new server because this is a prime time to update drivers. Also, please make a way to mass update which driver is used on a server. Nearly all our printers can use the universal printer driver and it would be so nice to just highlight them all, right click, select driver. I know there is a command line tool to do this, but getting a list of all the printers with a particular driver and then piping that list to the update command is very complicated.
