Single Instance Storage Groveler (System Services for the Windows Server 2003 Family and Windows XP Operating Systems)

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

Service Name: Groveler

Executable Name: grovel.exe

Log On As: LocalSystem

Description: The Single Instance Storage Groveler (SIS) service is an integral component of Remote Installation Services (RIS). SIS reduces the overall storage required on the RIS volume. The SIS drivers contain a feature called a “groveler agent” that scans the RIS volume for duplicate files. If the SIS groveler finds duplicate files, it copies the original file into the SIS and leaves a link file in its place. The link file contains information about the original file, such as its current location, size, and attributes. If an image contains duplicate files, those duplicates are copied into the store; as a result, less disk space is required on the RIS server.

SIS has two limitations:

  • It cannot act upon any files that are referenced through junction points.

  • It cannot be used with any file system except NTFS, which is the only file system supported on RIS servers.

If this service is stopped or disabled, files are no longer automatically linked in this manner, but the existing linked files are still accessible.

New RIS installation images will consume their full image size, and conserve little space.

If SIS is no longer needed on the system, use Add/Remove Windows Components to remove Remote Installation Services.

Available on: Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition; Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition; Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition and Windows Server 2003, Web Edition.
