Selecting where to apply permissions

Updated: January 21, 2005

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

Selecting where to apply permissions

When you set advanced permissions on files and folders, you can use Permission Entry for File or Folder Name to set which folders or subfolders will inherit permissions. In this dialog box, Apply onto lists the locations where you can apply permissions. How these permissions are applied depends on whether you select the Apply these permissions to objects and/or containers within this container only check box. By default, this check box is cleared.

Important

  • For Active Directory objects, not only will the specified objects in the Apply onto field inherit the access control entries but ALL child objects will receive a copy of that ACE. The child objects not specified in the Apply onto field will not utilize the ACE whose copy they receive but if there are enough objects that will get copies of this ACE, then that increased amount of data can cause serious performance problems to your network. For more information, see Best practices for assigning permissions on Active Directory objects in Help.

For more information, see How inheritance affects file and folder permissions.
