Encapsulated Ethernet over PVC

With encapsulated Ethernet over PVC, you can use an ATM network adapter to send and receive Ethernet packets across a permanent virtual circuit (PVC). Before this technology was developed, you had to install a separate driver for each digital subscriber line (DSL) network adapter to allow an Ethernet network to exchange information with an ATM network. With this technology, you need only provide the virtual path identifier (VPI), the virtual channel identifier (VCI), and the encapsulation type required by your service provider. After you configure these settings, the encapsulated Ethernet PVC transmits data through the ATM adapter. Encapsulated Ethernet over PVC performs the following functions:

  • It acts as an Ethernet adapter to the TCP/IP protocol.

  • It uses a PVC on the ATM adapter to transfer Ethernet packets.

  • It provides a mechanism to transport packets across a DSL.

  • It eliminates the need to install different drivers for different DSL network adapters.
