Defining Project Scope and Objectives

Defining your deployment objectives helps you to determine which Windows Server 2003 features you need to implement and how those features relate to your existing environment. Defining the project’s scope helps you to identify exactly what the team can and cannot deliver within the project constraints.

To identify your organization’s objectives in deploying Windows Server 2003, consider the following questions:

  • Why is your organization deploying Windows Server 2003?

  • What business benefits will your organization derive from deploying Windows Server 2003?

  • What IT benefits will your organization derive from deploying Windows Server 2003?

  • How does your organization’s current IT environment prevent you from meeting your organization’s business needs?

  • Who will be affected by the move from your current operating system to Windows Server 2003?

  • What must the deployment accomplish to be deemed successful?

  • To define the scope of the deployment, ask yourself what can reasonably be accomplished by this project and what cannot, given the time frame, your budget, and other resources.
