Configuring Drop Directories

For the default domain, you must identify a directory in which to drop all incoming messages. The SMTP service places messages for alias domains in the Drop directory used for the default domain. You can designate any directory as the Drop directory, provided it is local to the computer for the SMTP service and is not already assigned as the Pickup directory. By default, this is a subdirectory of the SMTP Mailroot directory.

Be sure your Drop directory is in a secure location and can be accessed only by trusted administrators. Otherwise, unauthorized users may be able to access messages in the directory.

Important

You must be a member of the Administrators group on the local computer to perform the following procedure or procedures. As a security best practice, log on to your computer by using an account that is not in the Administrators group, and then use the runas command to run IIS Manager as an administrator. At a command prompt, type runas /User:Administrative_AccountName "mmc systemroot\system32\inetsrv\iis.msc".

Procedures

To designate a Drop directory

  1. In IIS Manager, expand the SMTP virtual server, and then click Domains.

  2. In the details pane, right-click the default domain, and then click Properties.

  3. In the Drop directory box, type the directory used to drop all incoming messages. The default location is LocalDrive:\Inetpub\mailroot\Drop. Or click Browse and select the directory. Make sure that you select the Drop directory and not the Pickup directory.
