Description

Specifies whether the CD-ROM driver sends a Media Change Notification (MCN) message to clients, including the Windows interface, when it detects a change in media. The MCN message triggers media-related features, such as autoplay when a CD-ROM is inserted into the CD-ROM drive.

If the MCN message is disabled, then the media features that use it do not operate.

Value Meaning

0

Does not send an MCN message.

1

Sends an MCN message.

Activation Method

You can activate changes to the value of this entry by restarting the computer. Or, in Computer Management, in Device Manager, disable all CD-ROM drives and then enable all CD-ROM drives.

Note

  • If the value of this entry is 0, then Autoplay does not operate, regardless of the value of the NoDriveAutoRun entry (in HKLM and HKCU) and the NoDriveTypeAutoRun entry (in HKLM and HKCU).

Tip

  • To disable Autoplay on particular drives, use NoDriveAutoRun (in HKLM or HKCU) or NoDriveTypeAutoRun (in HKLM or HKCU). Do not disable the MCN message unless you have no alternative.

Caution

Disabling MCN may cause other system components, such as NT Media Services, to not work properly with the CD-ROMs in the system. Consider disabling only Autoplay, as described in Tips.
