Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

Service Name: mqds

Executable Name: mqdssvc.exe

Log On As: LocalSystem

Description: The Message Queuing Down Level Clients Support service provides Active Directory access for Message Queuing clients (Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, and Windows 2003) on domain controllers. The Message Queuing service optionally uses information published in Active Directory in order to obtain routing information for security-related objects (for example, destination public keys) and to learn about public queues.

If the Message Queuing service is installed in Workgroup mode, Active Directory is never accessed.

If this service is stopped or disabled on a domain controller, then previous versions of Message Queuing clients cannot obtain Active Directory services on the specified domain controller for public queue discoverability, message routing, and site recognition.

Available on: Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition; Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition; Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition and Windows Server 2003, Web Edition.
