Remote Desktop Connection

With Remote Desktop Connection, you can easily connect to a terminal server or to any computer running Remote Desktop. All you need is network access and permissions to connect to the other computer. Optionally, you can specify special settings for your connection and then save the settings for the next time you connect.

For help with specific tasks, see Remote Desktop Connection How To....

For general background information, see Remote Desktop Connection Concepts.

For troubleshooting information, see Troubleshooting Remote Desktop Connection.

Notes

  • To enable your computer to accept remote connections, your computer must be running Windows NT4 Terminal Server Edition, Windows 2000 Server, Windows XP Professional, or a Windows Server 2003 operating system. Check Help for your operating platform for more information.

  • To open Remote Desktop Connection, click Start, point to programs or All programs, point to Accessories, point to Communications, and then click Remote Desktop Connection.

  • To view a list of available computers on the domain, click the Computer arrow and select <Browse for more...>.

I get a message saying my workgroup does not contain any Terminal servers. What should I do? I only want to connect over my home LAN.

I am trying to remotely connect to my home computer from my office. My office computer is running Windows XP and my home computer is Windows Vista Ultimate. I am able to connect remotely to other computers from my office but cannot to my home computer. The error message is as follows:

This computer cannot connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again. If proglem continues contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator.

I have clicked "allow users to connect remotely to this computer" at the home computer. What else should I look for?
