To view and manage the system during text-mode Setup

Depending on the remote computer's hardware configuration, one or more of the following approaches can help you view and manage the system during text-mode Setup. If the remote computer has a serial port console redirection (SPCR) table, Emergency Management Services will automatically display the pertinent information. For more information, see your hardware manufacturer's documentation.

  • For x86-based systems, use Remote Installation Services (RIS) to install Windows Server 2003 operating systems.

  • If you are not using unattended Setup files, you must choose Express Setup when prompted.

  • If Setup fails, note any error messages that appear and attempt to correct any problems you discover.

Notes

  • When you are using GUI-mode Setup, you must perform an unattended Setup. This allows GUI-mode Setup to proceed without prompting you for input. If you do not perform an unattended Setup, GUI-mode Setup will fail.

  • You can use RIS-based installations to perform unattended Setups. When you RIS-based installations for this purpose, it is not necessary to use the operating system CD or a floppy disk containing a Winnt.sif file. For more information on RIS and the Winnt.sif file, see Related Topics.

Information about functional differences

  • Your server might function differently based on the version and edition of the operating system that is installed, your account permissions, and your menu settings. For more information, see Viewing Help on the Web.
