SAP Agent (System Services for the Windows Server 2003 Family and Windows XP Operating Systems)

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

Service Name: NwSapAgent

Executable Name: svchost.exe -k netsvcs

Log On As: LocalSystem

Description: The SAP Agent service advertises network services on an IPX network by using the Internetwork Packet Exchange Service Advertising Protocol (IPX SAP) protocol. It also forwards advertisements on a multihomed host. Some features, such as Client Services for NetWare, rely on the SAP Agent.

The SAP Agent service requires the NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol to be installed.

If this service is stopped or disabled, IPX service discovery does not work; the server does not advertise itself, and clients are not able to reach it.

Available on: Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition; Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition; Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition and Windows Server 2003, Web Edition.

Installed through: In Network Connections, right-click a local area connection, click Properties, click Install, click Service, click Add, and then click Service Advertising Protocol.
