Virtual Disk Service (System Services for the Windows Server 2003 Family and Windows XP Operating Systems)

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

Service Name: VDS

Executable Name: Vds.exe

Log On As: LocalSystem

Description: Virtual Disk Service (VDS) provides a single interface for managing block storage virtualization, whether done in operating system software, redundant array of independent disks (RAID) storage hardware subsystems, or other virtualization engines.

VDS provides a vendor-neutral and technology-neutral interface for the management of logical volumes (in software) and logical units (in hardware). Management operations include binding, topology discovery and tracking, volume status and fault tracking, and performance monitoring.

Virtual disks should not be confused with snapshots. Unlike the Volume Shadow Copy service, VDS does not coordinate with applications or the file system. Thus, the data contained on a volume will not be synchronized prior to a volume or disk configuration operation. VDS might be used to configure a mirror plex, but a snapshot provider is necessary to perform the coordination when removing the plex and surfacing the snapshot. That use is outside the scope of this document with two exceptions:

  • VDS coordinates with the file system prior to extending or shrinking volumes.

  • Full-copy snapshots appear as plexes to VDS.

If this service is stopped or disabled, VDS is no longer available.
