Process for Deploying Dial-up and VPN Remote Access Servers

Updated: March 28, 2003

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

The key to providing a secure and reliable remote access solution that meets your organization’s needs is to carefully plan and test your remote access design after deciding whether to deploy a dial-up network, a VPN, or a combination of both. Deploying a VPN remote access server involves different tasks than are required to deploy a dial-up remote access server; however, often your remote access solution will involve elements of both. Figure 8.1 shows the process for designing and deploying dial-up and VPN remote access servers.
