FTP server terminates user connections and returns MSFTPSVC event message 8

Updated: August 22, 2005

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1

If you host a high-load FTP site with the FTP anonymous home directory on an UNC share, you may encounter the following event message in the Event Log: "FTP Server could not create a client worker thread for user at host ip_address. The connection to this user is terminated. The data is the error."

This happens when a large number of clients (approximately 1000) attempt to access the same UNC path at the same time and all of the redirector connections are in use. To remedy this problem, enable caching of the anonymous home directory with the registry key CacheAnonymousHomeDirInfo, and set the related timeout values in the registry keys AnonymousHomeDirInfoInterval and AnonymousHomeDirInfoGrace.
