Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

Ntbackup

HKCU\Software\Microsoft

Description

The Ntbackup subkey contains entries that store configuration data for Windows Backup (Ntbackup.exe). Windows Backup enables you to back up files to tape, and to restore files from tape. You can use Windows Backup to back up the files in which the registry is stored.

Note

  • When you upgrade from a previous version of Windows on which you used Windows Backup, delete the subkeys and entries in the Ntbackup subkey before running the upgraded version of Windows Backup. This ensures that registry entries are appropriate to the most recent version of Windows Backup.

  • To run Windows Backup, from the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Backup.

Caution

  • When you configure Windows Backup, it adds its default subkeys and entries to the registry. Some of these entries are no longer used by Windows Backup. The other entries are maintained by the system, and you should never change any of them by editing the registry. Altering these values can prevent Windows Backup from successfully backing up and/or restoring data, and it can cause your system to behave unpredictably.
