Disk Management

You use Disk Management in Windows XP Professional and Windows Server 2003 operating systems to perform disk-related tasks, such as creating and formatting partitions and volumes, and assigning drive letters. On computers running Windows Server 2003 operating systems, you can also use Disk Management to perform advanced tasks, such as creating and repairing fault tolerant volumes. In addition, you can use the DiskPart command, along with other command-line utilities, to perform Disk Management tasks. For information about Disk Management-related command-line utilities, see Managing disks and volumes from the command line.

Hard Drive Help      cregiver ... paplov   |   Edit   |   Show History

One of my hard drives has gone missing. It was working fine until I tried installing an aditional one.

Now I can only find it in the Disk Management application and it appears to be unallocated. How can I get it to be recognized again without loosing all my files?

Format problem      AllOn   |   Edit   |   Show History
I am having a problem formatting a disk drive.

I just installed Windows 7 on a 1TB WD hard drive. No problems, and Windows 7 is excellent.

I have a second HD in my computer, a Seagate 500GB ST3500320NS, that I want to use for backup.

The Seagate drive was working fine (it had files and folders on it that were all read fine in W7), but I wanted to clean it off completely, so I decided to Format it.

I highlighted the drive, right clicked, and selected format. It took about an hour to slowly format the drive, but when it got to the end, I get the message, Unable to Format Drive.
The drive is now unusable, and no matter what I try, I cannot get it to format. I've even used disk management (it says the drive is: Simple / Basic / RAW / Healthy (Active / Primary Partition) / 465.76 GB.

Any suggestions?
