Server (System Services for the Windows Server 2003 Family and Windows XP Operating Systems)

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

Service Name: lanmanserver

Executable Name: svchost.exe -k netsvcs

Log On As: LocalSystem

Description: The Server service provides RPC support, file printing, and named pipe sharing over the network. It allows the sharing of local resources (such as disks and printers) so that other users on the network can access them. It also allows named pipe communication between applications running on other computers and your computer, which is used for RPC.

Named pipe communication is memory reserved for the output of one process to be used as input for another process. The input-accepting process does not need to be local to the computer.

If this service is stopped, you cannot share files and printers on this computer with other computers on the network, and the computer cannot satisfy RPC requests. You also cannot serve named pipes to other computers on the network.

If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on this service will fail to start.
