Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) (System Services for the Windows Server 2003 Family and Windows XP Operating Systems)
Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2
Service Name: WINS
Executable Name: Wins.exe
Log On As: LocalSystem
Description: Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) enables NetBIOS name resolution. The presence of the WINS server(s) is crucial for locating the network resources identified by using NetBIOS names. WINS servers are required unless all domains have been migrated to Active Directory and all servers on the network are running Windows Server 2003.
|When performing a clean installation of any member of the Windows Server 2003 family, you have to explicitly select WINS in order to have it installed on the computer. By default, WINS is not installed.|
For more information about WINS, see the Networking Guide of the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit (or see the Networking Guide on the Web at (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsserver/bb633748.aspx)).
If this service is stopped or disabled, the following occurs:
Locating Windows NT 4.0 domains and domain controllers does not succeed.
Locating Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 Active Directory domains and domain controllers from Windows NT 4.0 clients does not succeed.
NetBIOS name resolution fails, unless the device whose name must be resolved is on the same subnet as the device attempting name resolution. The device must be configured to attempt NetBIOS name resolution by using broadcasts.
