Updated: August 22, 2005

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 with SP1

Authentication and Access Control Diagnostics (Authdiag.exe) Version 1.0 allows you to review, test, and correct problems with authentication and authorization. You can use Authdiag.exe to check settings on Web sites, FTP sites, virtual directories, Web directories, and files. Authdiag.exe can help you troubleshoot the following types of issues:

  • ACCESS DENIED errors caused by the following situations:

    • NTFS authentication failures

    • Required privileges missing

    • Invalid permissions on registry keys

    • Incorrect configuration for IIS metabase properties.

  • Authentication failures based on invalid configuration.

  • UNC configuration issues.

  • Failure of the system default permissions for IIS, based on incorrect permissions to directories such as %windir%\system32\inetsrv.

  • Failure within an Active Server Page (ASP) based on failed permissions.

  • Failure to access the Home Directory or FTP Root because the Anonymous User or Authenticated User does not have the appropriate permissions.

Authdiag.exe provides both user interface (UI) and command-line modes of operation. Use the UI mode for troubleshooting authentication and authorization problems on a local server. Use the command-line mode for troubleshooting on a local server.
