Description

The Environment key stores the values of environment variables that users can set. Each entry in this key associates an environment variable with the path that is substituted for the variable. The user's profile defines the default values for these entries.

Change Method

To change the values of entries in this key, in Control Panel double-click System, click the Advanced tab, and then click Environment Variables. These entries appear in the User variables for user-name section.

Activation Method

To make changes to the entries in this key effective, you must log off and then log on again. Changes to these variables take effect when a non-Windows-based application is run or when the command prompt is used.

Caution

  • The data type of entries in this key must be REG_EXPAND_SZ. If a user or application changes the data type, the system will not replace the variable with its intended value.
