Securing an Existing Virtual Directory with a UNC Path

Use the following procedure to further secure an existing virtual directory with a UNC path.

Important

You must be a member of the Administrators group on the local computer to perform the following procedure or procedures. As a security best practice, log on to your computer by using an account that is not in the Administrators group, and then use the runas command to run IIS Manager as an administrator. At a command prompt, type runas /User:Administrative_AccountName "mmc %systemroot%\system32\inetsrv\iis.msc".

Procedures

To secure an existing virtual directory with a UNC path

  1. In IIS Manager, right-click the virtual directory you want to secure, and click Properties.

  2. Click Connect As....

  3. To use delegation to pass the local user's credentials to the remote computer, select the Always use the authenticated user's credentials when validating access to the network resource check box and leave the Username and Password boxes blank. Proceed to step 5.

  4. To secure the virtual directory and share with a static user name and password, specify the user name as Domain\username in the User name box, specify a password in the Password box, clear the Always use the authenticated user's credentials when validating access to the network resource check box, and click Next.

  5. Click OK.
