Microsoft® Windows Server® 2003 R2 extends the Microsoft commitment to full interoperability between Microsoft Windows® and UNIX by integrating the key components necessary for interoperability directly into the core Windows Server product.
Note
Throughout this document, we use the term "UNIX" to refer to resources and authentication of UNIX and Linux users and computers.
The interoperability components in Windows Server 2003 R2 are functionally similar to their equivalent modules in Windows Services for UNIX 3.5. However, there are many important enhancements and updates since the release of Windows Services for UNIX 3.5.
Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 is available for use on 32-bit versions of Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition, and Microsoft Windows Server 2003. The UNIX interoperability components of Windows Server 2003 R2 are available and supported on all versions of the product.
Note
The Active Directory® Domain Services schema is updated on your domain controller (DC) during the Windows Server 2003 R2 installation. This schema update includes the necessary extensions for Network File System (NFS) authentication, and an additional schema update is not required to enable the components described in this white paper.
