Migration of Domain Controllers

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

In Active Directory, domain controllers can be migrated between domains. To do this, you must remove Active Directory from the domain controller, migrate it as a member server to the target domain, and then reinstall Active Directory. Note that if the server is running Windows 2000, you cannot install Active Directory in the target domain if the target domain is already at the Windows Server 2003 functional level. In this case, you must upgrade the server to Windows Server 2003 before installing Active Directory.
