What Is New in Windows Server 2003 R2?

Applies To: Windows Server 2003 R2

Windows Server 2003 R2 includes a suite of UNIX interoperability components as part of the core operating system. These components include:

  • Identity Management for UNIX

    • Password synchronization

    • Server for NIS

  • Services for Network File System (NFS)

    • Client for NFS

    • Server for NFS

    • User Name Mapping service

    • Server for NFS Authentication

    • RPC port mapper

  • Subsystem for UNIX-based applications (SUA)

In addition to these components, the administration tools have been updated and improved. For example, the graphical administration tools include the Services for NFS console (shown in Figure 1) and the Microsoft Identity Management for UNIX console (shown in Figure 2).

Another important feature in the UNIX interoperability components is support for 64-bit operating systems. Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 does not support 64-bit Windows, but Windows Server 2003 R2 fully supports 64-bit interoperability.

Note

Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition has no support for any UNIX interoperability components, nor does it allow you to install Windows Services for UNIX 3.5.
